Contact Young Sounds

Many Young Sounds members have gone on to become successful, full-time professional musicians. Band alumni include:

Sonya Jason
member 1979-81
Music education opens up many opportunities in a persons life. For saxophonist Jason, those opportunities include making a living at something she loves and travelling around the globe, not to mention meeting and working with musicians she respects and admires. As she wrote in a letter to the players "Young Sounds gave me valuable training in the pursuit of excellence both musically and professionally, and I thrived in an environment where everyone worked together toward this goal."

Lewis Nash Drummer Nash joined Betty Carter's band when he was just 23 years old, honing his chops with world-class musicians like Benny Green, Stephen Scott, and Don Braden. From 1990 to 2000, Lewis was a member of the Tommy Flanagan Trio, performing with a veritable who's who of jazz luminaries; Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Wynton Marsalis, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, Branford Marsalis, and Horace Silver, to name only a few. Currently, while he continues to perform and record with a wide variety of artists, Nash leads several of his own exciting groups, from duo to septet.

Joey Sellers Trombonist Sellers, Director of Jazz Studies at Saddleback College, teaches improvisation, jazz ensembles, composition, and jazz history. An accomplished composer, Sellers has written for Doc Severinsen, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, symphony orchestras in Tulsa, Long Beach and San Antonio and several works commissioned by the St. Louis Brass.

Phil Strange Pianist Phil Strange tells us, "Young Sounds was an amazing program that allowed me to play and learn from top professionals, including Bud Brisbois, and many others. It meant a lot to me, and I hope the great tradition continues!
Thanks
!"

Gabe Johnson:
Weber Scholarship 2000 Winner

Former Young Sounds of Arizona trumpeter Gabriel Johnson has been named the 2000 Weber Scholarship Winner. The $1,000.00 Weber Scholarship was established in perpetuity in the 1990’s by Local 586 Board Member, Herb Weber and his wife, Betty.

This scholarship is awarded to deserving young collegiate musicians who are pursuing performing and/or teaching careers in the Classical or Jazz fields.

Gabe Johnson distinguished himself as the best of a field of talented young players. Carrying a 3.5 grade point average in his second year of study at Mesa Community College, Gabe studies weekly with Local 586 trumpet master, Fred Forney.

Gabe’s future is at the New England Conservatory following a brilliant January audition which allowed him to become one of the only Jazz students ever to be accepted early by that great school. Gabe plans to be an active player and teacher “so that I can give back some of the knowledge that was given to me, to…young kids who are excited to learn like I am now”. Well said, Gabriel! You have our best wishes and congratulations on this and the future achievements which we know will come.
